(By Miles Whitelock) So the lovely cricket field once more reverted to a barren meadow, lush only with dandelions, cowslips, thistles and buttercups.

Whitchurch Tour to France, July 2007

Whitchurch enjoyed mixed fortunes, mixed weather and one or two mixed drinks on tour to France in July.

Cormac arrived fashionably late on Saturday in the vain hope that we wouldn't notice that he was driving his new Renault Kangoo (sponsored by Motability Whitchurch).

Eventually we stopped laughing long enough to make 233 for 4 (Russell 100*, Jones 40) before winning by 19 runs in the final over, keeping Les Ormes down to 214 for 6 (Scanlon 114, Seward 3 for 20).

Some comedy fielding kept the fine-master busy distributing wine-coloured paint-stripper at the barbecue after the game, before moving on to over-refreshment in the bar.

Sunday's game was almost rained-off, despite the artificial pitch, but Le Ormes won a reduced (30 overs) game by 8 wickets, after restricting Whitchurch to 96 all out.

History of Whitchurch Cricket Club, Part One: Between The Wars

(By Miles Whitelock) It has been suggested to me that the residents of Whitchurch might be interested to read a short account of the history of Whitchurch Cricket Club as I remember it. I was born at Underwood in Hardwick Road in 1918.

Any story to be told must also include impressions of some of its more active and colourful members. In writing this I have no wish to appear anything but affectionate and loyal to those who have created a lasting tradition.

The ground was acquired by my father, A.R. Whitelock, in 1921. Originally it had been a lush meadow, seemingly much enjoyed by a pedigree herd of Mr Aldridge's ruminating cows, but at the time no longer required for their use. It will be appreciated that in 1921 the country had hardly recovered from the awful consequences of the 1st World War. The Cricket Club, though theoretically in existence, had no ground and no equipment.
